We were excited when we awoke this morning, looking forward to our time in New Mexico. We spent a large chunk of the day driving the roughly 4 hours or so from El Paso north on 25 to Albuquerque. This drive was beautiful, and marked by impressive desert and mountain landscape. One of our favorite views was just south of Truth and Consequences, NM where a mountain range met with the Rio Grande. Similar to Hawaii, our camera can just simply not do these images justice. One of the early highlights of the day was a stopover at a rest area where we searched each scary, abandoned building until we found the snack machines. The snacks were in heavily-barred machines in a very dark, hot room with no windows. Inside this room, there were two Hispanic men wearing cowboy hats and boots, crouched on the floor. The very best and most amazing part was that there was somehow a radio in this room, and the Phil Collins/Phillip Bailey duet “Easy Lover” was blasting loudly and reverberating off the adobe walls. For those of you that don’t know, Phil Collins is Maggie’s guilty pleasure, and when she is feeling down all Tommy needs to do is put on either this song or “Sussidio” to cheer her up. Tommy groaned as we walked into the room and Maggie broke into a little dance and sang along as she bought her Diet Pepsi….all to the amusement of the curious men watching from the corner.
