We started the day with some glorious sleep, after having only achieved 4-5 hours of this valuable activity each day over the last week due to our many preparations. After eating some breakfast at Dave’s apartment, we headed out to the Georgia Aquarium. Tommy has been talking about the whale sharks they have here for weeks, so there was great anticipation in the air. We also felt very fancy speeding around in David's awesome new Scion. See above for photograph.
The Georgia Aquarium is the largest in the world, covers 9 acres, and has more than 100,000 different species of fish and sea creatures. The aquarium is broken down into themed regions, so we started out in the local “Georgia” area and then ended our tour in the “Tropical Diver” display which covers the pacific ocean reef sea-life. How appropriate!
I have to say, I was not as impressed by the whale sharks as anticipated. Tommy kept telling me that they were as big as blue whales. This is not true. They are an average of 30 feet in length, but can reach upwards of 60 feet. However, I loved the beluga whales, which have permanent smiley faces and the big sea turtles with their gentle eyes. One of the coolest exhibits involved African penguins, wherein after waiting in a long line with children and Asian tourists, Maggie was able to climb up into a little dome and stand right next to the penguins for a photo opportunity. Unfortunately, one of the penguins was moved to have a large, loose BM as soon as she emerged into the dome, which she did not notice at the time (even though it was happening about 2 inches from her head). Tommy and David surely noticed, and Maggie was left to wonder why they were laughing hysterically and pointing at her as she stood amongst the penguins.
Later that evening, we went to a BBQ at Jessica's house (one of Tommy & David's cousins on their mother's side), which was very fun. Jessica made homeade mint chocolate ice cream, which was delicious! We enjoyed relaxing with Jessica's friends and a couple other loosely related relatives several times removed. :) That night, we retired again to the enormous television and watched "Casino Royale". This was seriously better than watching a movie in the theatre. You could see everything in the greatest detail, down to ever pore on Daniel Craig's face (and he is seriously so gorgeous that looking closely at his pores wasn't the slightest bit gross).
