Driving To Work

My job involves driving all around Oahu to meet with therapists and provide clinical supervision for their cases. While some people hate driving and the traffic that comes with it, I actually really enjoy the drive because the views are pretty astounding. Every time I feel like I am beginning to habituate to the spectacular views, I have a day where I see huge, double rainbows on my morning commute and it all seems new again. I thought I would try to capture the sights on my morning drive this week and share them with you....

Most of these views are leaving Windward side and going up either Likelike Highway or the H-3 Interstate. Either way, you have to go through tunnels in these Ko'olau mountains to get to the lower half of the island where Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, etc are located. Interestingly, this mountain range is in fact just the fragmented remnant of the eastern sheild volcano of Oahu. The range was formed as a single mountain called Ko'olau Volcano, and what you see in these pictures are the western half of the volcano that was destroyed in prehistoric times.

The second picture from the top shows my view of Honolulu as I brave the H-1 traffic coming from the west. There is also one view of the windward coast from the H-3 interstate. A picture taken while driving cannot quite capture the beauty of this sight when you emerge from any of the three tunnels that pass through the mountains. I love that I get to see this every day on my way home from work...
